You can create fields using files stored on your computer. These may have been supplied by government services, exported from farm machinery or GPS devices, or created using other mapping software. The most common file formats for this kind of data are .shp, .kmz and .kml.

You may already have some field boundaries stored as files on your computer, for example in shape files or KMZs. You can upload them here to quickly map out your fields in fieldmargin.

Where can I get these files?

  • In some countries it is possible to request field boundary files from your government authority. Countries where this service is available are the USA, Scotland and Holland.

  • Machinery that has GPS steering is likely to have boundary files recorded which can be transferred to your computer.

  • If you have mapped your farm with other software, for example Google Earth, you may be able to export this information

You can check if you have some of these files on your computer already by doing a search for some of the most common file extensions: .shp, .shx, .dbf, .kml and .kmz.

We only accept KML, KMZ and SHP files.

How to

  1. In the fieldmargin web app go to the fields tab and click on ‘ADD’ and the "IMPORT"

  2. You will be shown a list of ways you can use to import fields, in the list you will see ‘Boundary Uploader’ - click on this.

  3. On the next screen click ‘Get started', you will then go to a screen where you can select your files. Click on the grey area at the bottom or drag and drop the files you want to upload onto it.

If you are uploading a shapefile you must include 4 files for each boundary - .shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj

We are only able to process areas - not lines or points.

  4. You will be prompted to choose which column in the data on your file is the field name (this normally will be called name or field name)

  5. Now you will see a map with a preview of your fields and a list of their names. You can

    1. Choose which fields to include by clicking them on the map or the cross/plus next to them. Blue fields are selected, white with a dotted line means they are not included.

    2. Rename them using the text boxes on the right.

    3. Use the crosshairs symbol to navigate to a field on the map

  6. When you’re happy with your selections click ‘Create fields’

  7. You will be taken back to the farm view with your fields on the map. Now you can add usages to them to record cropping, add livestock or record Field Jobs.
